Each campaign has a set of objectives that it seeks to achieve. Moreover, it also has a set of goals that must be achieved by the organisation at large in a long term. These goals are part of what sets apart different leaders as they campaign for leadership of the organisations, so that part of what they are going to be elected for is to drive initiatives that will lead to the achievement of these organisational goals.
My raising my hand to say I will stand as a candidate of the SAFA Presidency is not because of personal gain or access to power, but to add value at the South African Football Association by driving key initiatives in the achievement of specific goals. These are the goals that will set us as South Africans apart from other African countries, and even to a point where we can begin to compete in all respects globally.
Below are these set of key initiatives that I will drive along-side all the other strategic interventions at SAFA, with the support and buy-in of Members, NEC members and other stakeholders.
Areas of Transformation
Primary Areas of Development
Primary Areas of Job Creation
Initiatives to Include (among others)
Areas of Focus to Include
The current SAFA leadership has been, and still taking football away from the hands of the people of South Africa. It invests so much of its efforts to amassing power and self-preservation. They shun accountability and do remove all the people who seek to get them to account from their positions. They had more constitutional amendments in a decade than any sporting organisation in South Africa, and most of them are about power play, and not about football. It was better if we were going nowhere slowly, but we are going backwards, fast. South Africans have no say in South African football. That is one of the many things that is wrong with the current leadership.
The power play and self-preservation will continue. More leaders who really have football interest at heart, like Ria Ledwaba, will be finally ousted (same happened to Mr. Mokoena, Mr. Mooka, Mr. Nhlapho, Mr. Mazibuko, Mr. Nonkonyane, etc). Sponsors will continue to dwindle. The distance between SAFA and NSL will continue to broaden. Governance will continue to breakdown. LFAs will continue to be ignored. The smaller elite class will continue to benefit at the expense of South Africans at large. The commercial value at SAFA will continue to shrink. We will never experience sustained Continental Glory.
Currently the SAFA Regions, national Associate Members and a Special Member (PSL) elect the SAFA Leadership. Regions are expected to consult with LFAs in ensuring that the will of the people prevails, but this rarely happens. Not only do regions mostly not consult with the LFAs, but the delegates themselves also break rank with their regions and sell their votes to the highest bidder. It is important to know that there is a solution to this.
The SAFA Congress environment is a tense one for all the wrong reasons. People’s views, especially those who differ with the current president of SAFA, get suppressed. We have seen the recent removal of the SAFA Tshwane President from the Congress for raising a point of order. Regions need to take a stand and break rank with the abuse that most of them have been gripped with. The people of South Africa, LFAs and other football stakeholders are urged to get in touch with the regions, reason with each other, and make the right decision. The Elective Congress is set for the 25th of June 2022. Regions are to nominate Mr. Solly Mohlabeng as the President of SAFA by the 19th of April 2022. Get the instructions here.
The Regions hold the power to vote. Every energy must be put to engaging SAFA Regions near us by contacting the Regional Secretaries / Regional Executive Officers. A region is demarcated according to the municipal districts and metros. There is a SAFA region in each district and metro in the country. Alternatively, get information from your nearest Local Football Association. These are in every township / suburb in the land. But it is important that we make efforts to get the regions to represent our aspirations when they go to Congress.
It is always best to get involved in football to get your voice heard. The way to do that is to get involved with the local club that subscribes to association football (not gambling football). Such a club would be affiliated to a Local Football Association. As you learn the ropes in terms of the running of the Club, affiliation to the Local Football Association, and taking part in the activities of the Local Football Association, you are as good as being part of the football fraternity, and your voice will matter in how football is run and governed. This is a long-term approach and it works. It begins with us.
